Hi, I'm Natalie! I am a senior mechanical engineering student at UT Austin interested in building physical products that work well not only technically, but in the context of the people who actually use them.

I'm passionate about the intersection of technical problem solving, creative design, and meaningful impact. I enjoy working with others to develop thoughtful solutions to real-world problems, especially products and tools that make people's lives easier, better, or more functional.

I'm currently looking for full-time mechanical engineering opportunities beginning in 2027.

01 — Background

Background

I was drawn to mechanical engineering because I liked understanding how things worked, but my experiences at UT have shaped that curiosity into a stronger interest in product development and the people behind it.

In the BioMATTER Lab, working with tissue, bone, and bioprinted materials showed me how meaningful technical work can be when there is a clear human outcome. Design and manufacturing coursework then pulled me toward the physical side of engineering, taking ideas from CAD to machined, tested, and iterated parts. I learned how manufacturing constraints shape a realistic design.

My work in the Marras Research Group showed me that I'm just as interested in software when it makes a technical process simpler and more accessible. At Rimkus Engineering, I approached problems from the opposite direction, working backward from real failures and combining technical observations and context to understand the larger system.

Outside of engineering, my tutoring business, guiding with the Outdoor Center, and student leadership have reinforced how much I value collaboration and communication. Together, these experiences have drawn me toward work where technical problem solving, creative design, and teamwork come together to create something genuinely useful for people.

Research & Projects

DNA Origami to Printable STL Application

Marras Research Group, UT Austin · May 2026 – Present

Marras Research Group works with DNA origami — nanoscale structures built from strands of DNA — but physically prototyping those designs at a larger scale required specialized software to convert complex molecular geometry into printable models. I coded a Python pipeline that processes tens of thousands of atomic coordinates and converts raw PDB models into simplified, 3D-printable geometry. I then iterated through printing challenges involving flatness, adhesion, geometry, and scale across different structures. What I like most about the project is that the result isn't just a successful print, but an automated tool that makes physical prototyping simpler and more accessible for the researchers using it. I'm currently building the front end of the application so the rest of the lab can use the workflow without needing to manipulate the code.

RC Car Tractor-Pull Redesign

Machine Elements · Spring 2026

Our team redesigned an RC car to improve tractor-pull performance by increasing traction, torque, and drivetrain strength. I used machine-element calculations, FEA, CAD, and prototyping to guide changes to the gear ratio, rear shafts, wheel interfaces, and rims, then tested how those changes affected performance. The final design increased average tractor-pull capacity by 29%, from 600 g to 776.7 g.

Machined Mechanical Vise

Machine Tool Operations · Spring 2026

I manufactured a complete mechanical vise from aluminum and brass stock using manual mills, lathes, CNC machining, a drop saw, and press fitting. Machining every surface, hole, thread, fit, and moving component into one functioning assembly gave me a much stronger understanding of tolerancing and design for manufacturing than CAD alone. Now when I design something, I naturally think about tool selection, material properties, tolerances, datum selection, and how the part will actually be manufactured.

Wind-Powered Speed Indicator

Mechatronics · Fall 2025

Our team built a wind-powered system that generated and conditioned an electrical signal, then used an Arduino to translate it into a five-tier LED speed display. It was one of my first projects combining mechanical, electrical, and software design. I enjoyed debugging how those systems interacted and working across disciplines to get the full system functioning reliably.

Mechanical Characterization of Biomaterials

BioMATTER Lab, UT Austin · October 2023 – September 2024

My first long-term engineering research experience put me at the intersection of mechanics and biology, studying age-related degeneration in musculoskeletal tissue and bone. We explored bioprinted materials and structures for future minimally invasive treatments. I helped develop research plans, prepared and imaged samples, performed stress–strain testing, printed GelMA scaffolds, and created experimental schematics for publication. I especially liked that the technical work had a clear human endpoint and that the project required us to decide not only how to test something, but what questions were worth exploring.

Rimkus Engineering Consulting Group

Engineering Intern · Austin, TX · Summers 2023 & 2026

At Rimkus, I worked alongside forensic engineers investigating water damage and mechanical system failures, documenting field conditions and helping piece together the causes behind real-world failures. I also built a standardized database from more than 900 consultant résumés to organize technical specialties, licenses, certifications, and project experience for staffing and proposals. I liked seeing engineering from the opposite direction—starting with something that failed and working backward to understand why.

Longhorn Tutors

Founder & STEM Tutor · Austin, TX · 2020 – Present

I started tutoring independently in high school and eventually built a small team as demand grew. Today, I tutor students across a range of grade levels, manage three other tutors, and coordinate scheduling and communication with students and families. Tutoring has taught me how important it is to meet people where they are and adjust how I explain a problem based on their understanding, confidence, and learning style. Managing the team has strengthened a different side of my communication—setting expectations clearly, delegating, and keeping people aligned without micromanaging.

JNL Real Estate

Bookkeeper · 2021 – 2023

I managed bookkeeping for eight mobile-home communities, including rent rolls, utility billing, invoicing, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliation, and monthly reporting. The role gave me an early appreciation for accuracy, organization, and being responsible for details that other people depend on. It also taught me to look beyond the numbers themselves and understand the story they tell about how a business is operating.

UT Outdoor Center

Supervisor & Adventure Trip Guide · August 2026 – Present

At UT's Outdoor Center, I help run daily operations, rent outdoor equipment, and advise customers on gear for their trips and activities. I also lead adventure trips involving transportation, logistics, equipment, and participant safety. Guiding has taught me how to communicate clearly, stay calm when plans change, and make sound judgment calls with the whole group in mind. I've also learned that good leadership depends on understanding what people need, communicating expectations clearly, and cultivating an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions and speaking up, especially when they're in a new environment.

Women in Mechanical Engineering

Treasurer · August 2026 – Present

As treasurer for Women in Mechanical Engineering, I manage the organization's finances and help support events and programs that bring mechanical engineering students together outside the classroom. I like being able to contribute to a community I'm already part of while helping create opportunities for students to connect, support one another, and feel more involved in the department.

Texas Infinites

Philanthropy Officer · Spring 2025 – Present

As philanthropy officer for Texas Infinites, I help organize fundraising events that support Casa Marianella, an Austin nonprofit serving displaced immigrants and refugees. Our events have included benefit concerts, thrift sales, sports tournaments, bake sales, and profit shares. A big part of the role is figuring out how to create events that people actually want to participate in, then coordinating the people, logistics, and promotion needed to make them successful. I like turning a lot of moving pieces into something that brings people together and has a tangible impact in the community.
